Caterpillar phacelia

The flowers of branching phacelia are crowded along one side of a coiled stem. As the stem uncoils, small white or pale lavender flowers open at the apex of the coil, developing into fuzzy seed pods along the straightened stem. Ultimately, each flower stem resembles a big green caterpillar.
