Bat

The California state bat is the Pallid bat in 2023.

The Mexican free-tailed bat is found in many different habitats from sea level to over 3600 meters. Ninety percent of the diet consists of moths. Foraging is usually at heights of six to 15 meters.

Roosts occur in bridges, buildings, culverts, hollow trees and caves. The Little Brown Myotis (commonly called the Little Brown Bat) is one of the most common bats in the U.S. and Canada.

Bats are not actually blind, but only use echolocation at night because it's too dark to see. Most species of bats rely on echolocation to help them find prey. This is why it is no problem at all for them to be able to find prey in complete darkness.

Owls, hawks and snakes eat bats, but that’s nothing compared to the millions of bats dying from white-nose syndrome. The disease — named for a white fungus on the muzzle and wings of bats — affects hibernating bats and has been detected in 37 states and seven Canadian provinces.
